ABOUT THE ARTIST:
I imagine that H.M. Bates was an amateur artist, painting in the fresh air while on holiday. It is possible that H.M. Bates was, like so many artists from the late 19th Century onwards into the 20th Century, staying at Arthog which provided a wealth of inspiration for their artistic talents, amateur and professional alike.

The old frame and backboard were damaged by woodworm. Fortunately they missed the painting completely, so there is still some good luck in the world.

THE STORY:
This view is looking to the north across the Mawddach Estuary towards Panorama Walk from Fegla Fawr, near Arthog and what is now Morfa Mawddach Railway station and the southern end of the Barmouth bridge.
The evening sun has just caught some of the clouds which may indicate that tomorrow will be a fine day –
Red sky at night,
Sailor’s delight.
Altogether a nice painting which would look really good when mounted and framed to complement the room where it will hang and to make the best of the painting.
