THE STORY:
Every good painting should have a story to go with it, something to stimulate the imagination.

It seems that, like so many of Llewelyn The Great’s castles, Dolbadarn, built in the early 13th century was to be taken by Edward 1st in the late 13th century. Dolbardarn was in a very strategic place in military terms. It was at the bottom of the Llanberis Pass, overlooking Llyn Padarn. It appears that Edward’s army was vastly superior in numbers to that of Llewelyn. I have just read that Edward had 7000 men, a vast army by comparison with the army the Welsh could raise.

The Brothers of Gwynedd Quartet (can be bought in one volume) by Edith Pargeter is a good read and tells pretty much all. Edith Pargeter, under her pen name of Ellis Peters wrote the Brother Cadfael series of novels which are also a brilliant read.
